Doctors go on strike in Portugal [September 24th and 25th]
Eighteen months ago, doctors in Portugal began strike action, calling for a 30% pay increase to restore our pay before troika times in 2008 and to improve working conditions. We are pushed to go on strike once again due to the intransigence of the Portuguese Government to negotiate solutions to attract doctors into the National Health Service (NHS).
Due to the lack of doctors, obstetrics and pediatric emergency rooms are often closed, forcing pregnant women and children to travel many miles and dozens of babies are being born in ambulances. In Portugal we have more than 1.6 million citizens without a family doctor and lack of palliative care and in the end of life.
Doctors in Portugal are among the lowest paid in the European Union. Therefore we are quitting the NHS in exchange to the private sector, working in outsourcing and emigration.
The National Federation of Doctors (FNAM) has called a strike for 24 and 25 September, scheduling a demonstration in front of the Ministry of Health for the first day of the strike, where we call all doctors, other health professionals and general population to take action together against the chaos in the NHS, established by the Ministry of Health. We demand the returning of a public, universal, accessible and quality NHS for the entire population.Follow us in multiple social media platforms: Instagram; Facebook; Youtube; X; Whatsapp; Telegram.
