The National Federation of Doctors in Portugal (FNAM) expresses its solidarity with resident doctors in England.

The strike action planned by the British Medical Association (BMA) from 15 to 19 June was suspended after the Government presented a new offer on pay, jobs and career progression, which will now be put to a vote by resident doctors. This development follows the unprecedented seven-day strike in April, when large parts of the NHS were brought to a standstill by doctors determined to defend fair pay and better working conditions.

Their determination demonstrates the power of collective action and reflects challenges faced by doctors across Europe. Portuguese doctors know these struggles well and continue to fight for fair recognition, better working conditions and a strong public National Health Service.

FNAM salutes the unity, courage and commitment shown by resident doctors in England. The defence of the medical profession and high-quality public healthcare is a shared cause that transcends borders.

To our colleagues in England: you are not alone. Portuguese doctors stand with you.
